intro
this is the exact playbook i used to get my first client with no portfolio, no followers, and no experience pitching. everything here is something i've personally done or seen work. no fluff, no courses to buy.
technique 1 — the free edit approach
find 3 small creators on instagram or youtube whose edits look rough. pick one of their videos, cut a 30 second clip, edit it yourself, make it better. then send it to them — no pitch, no rate, just "hey i made this for you."
that's it. two of the first three creators i sent this to replied. one asked how much i charge. that became my first client. no portfolio needed — just one free edit that did the talking.
who this works for: editors with zero clients and zero portfolio.
technique 2 — the comment strategy
before you send anyone a free edit, warm them up first. find creators in your niche and leave genuine comments on their last 3 posts — not "great content" but something specific about their video. build familiarity. after a few days, send the free edit. they already know your name and are way more likely to respond.
who this works for: editors who want higher reply rates on their outreach.
technique 3 — post your process publicly
don't just post finished edits. post a before and after of a video you improved — even a stranger's public video. caption it "i found this video and edited it for fun — here's what i changed and why." creators will see it, want the same for their content, and reach out to you. your content becomes your portfolio.
who this works for: editors who are already posting content or want to start.
technique 4 — niche down your outreach
don't send free edits to random creators. pick one niche — fitness, food, real estate, lifestyle — and edit 3 videos all from that niche. now you have niche-specific samples even before you have a real client. when you pitch someone in that space, you're showing them edits that look like their world.
who this works for: editors who want to charge more and attract better clients.
